What exactly is UV light?

UV, or ultraviolet light, is a type of electromagnetic radiation that has a shorter wavelength than visible light. It falls just outside of the violet end of the visible light spectrum and can be harmful to your eyes.

Electromagnetic radiation, which is transmitted in particles or waves at different wavelengths and frequencies, comes from the sun. We're getting too technical now - enough of that.

In summary, UV light is responsible for your summer tan, and unfortunately of some other less enjoyable consequences!

What are the dangers of UV light for your eyes?

Okay, so we don't want to scare you off gaming on the beach, but it's important that we highlight some of the risks of exposing your eyes to UV light for extended periods of time. Here are a few things that may make you put that controller down for a second.

Exposure to UV light is dangerous and can lead to:

  • Cataracts: This is a condition in which the lens of your eye becomes cloudy, eventually leading to vision loss.
  • Photokeratitis: Also known as "snow blindness", this is an inflammation of the cornea caused by exposure to UV radiation. It can cause pain, tears, and blurry vision.
  • Pterygium: This is a growth on the conjunctiva (the thin membrane that covers the front of the eye) that can obstruct vision.
  • Cancer of the eye: Although rare, exposure to UV radiation can increase your risk of developing cancerous tumors on the eye.

Wow, that's a lot to take in! Stay with us for a second though, as we share a few key tips on how you can protect your eyes from harmful UV light further down in this article.

How much UV light is emitted from your computer screen?

The reality here is not that much and that’s great news. In fact, screens only emit a very very small amount of UV radiation when compared to the sun

What you do however need to be careful of is using screens outside or in overly exposed environments. This is where UV and screens can be a nasty combo :

UV light is more present outside and as your eyes focus on your screen, it absorbs both direct sunlight and the one that bounces off your screen that goes directly into your eye. Ouch.

So the first thing to do is to have your work/game setup in the right environment.

So I’m safe inside right?

You are a bit more protected indoors from UV light. In normal conditions, using your screen is not a major concern when it comes to UV light.

But it is worth mentioning another enemy that comes directly from your screen, and that’s blue light.

Blue light is all around us. It's a type of visible light that has a shorter wavelength than other colors in the visible spectrum and is located just above their close UV cousins.

Should I also be worried about blue light?

Although blue light is not as harmful to the eye as UV radiation, it can still have negative effects if you're exposed to it for long periods of time (and god knows we are exposed to our fair share of screen time these days).

One of the main effects is the suppression of your sleep hormone (melatonin) which can contribute to major insomnia. Some long-term effects are still being studied but the first results are not super encouraging so we’d advise you to protect yourself to cover all your basis.

Ways to protect yourself from UV light (and blue light)

The good news is that it is easy to protect yourself from UV. Here are a few ways to reduce your exposure:

  • Avoid using your electronic device or playing computer games in direct sunlight.
  • Consider getting a pair of quality blue light sunglasses that have UV built-in protection.

What about protecting ourselves from artificial blue light?

  • Install an app on your phone or computer that filters out blue light. There are many different options available, so be sure to do your research and find one that best suits your needs.
  • Try to avoid using your computer or phone in the evening. This is one of the best ways to reduce harmful blue light exposure and get a good night's sleep.
  • Lastly, as we mentioned in the UV section above, one which we will unpack more of below, is to wear specifically designed blue light glasses when you are in front of a screen.

How do glasses protect against UV and blue light?

Some glasses are designed to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of blue light and UV radiation. They typically have tinted lenses with highly engineered filters that block out these types of light, preventing them from reaching your eyes.

They are specifically designed to filter out the harmful blue-violet light rays, the ones that are emitted from your screens as well as UV rays. To be technical, the light range from 380 to 450 nano meters (High energy blue light) will be strongly reduced and the range under 380 nm (UV) will be completely blocked.

This can help to reduce eye fatigue, headaches, poor sleep - and all of the other nasty long term dangers we mentioned above.
