Unlike your teeth, you only get one set of eyes. That’s why good eye health is so important to us at Horus X.

Unfortunately, everyone’s eyes deteriorate over time. But there are also factors that can make vision loss worse, given how sensitive the eyes are.

But with care, attention, and reassurance that they’re doing a great job, you can still keep your eyes in tip top shape for a long time.

We’ve gone through home remedies to see which ones are the best for naturally improving your eyesight at home.

How can I improve my eyesight naturally at home? 6 natural remedies

Whether it’s playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or rewatch Squid Game: The Challenge, you don’t want to miss a moment.

Luckily, these homemade remedies are super effective at strengthening your eyesight (although not necessarily your gaming success).

🥦 A balanced diet leads to healthy eyes

Your diet impacts a lot of different aspects of your health but we bet you never before thought about its impact on your eyes.

A nutritional diet rich in vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants is essential for your eyes to operate at maximum strength. Good eye health depends on what’s on your plate!

The best vitamins and minerals for healthy eyes are:

  • 🥕 Vitamin A: You can find Vitamin A in orange vegetables and fruits (carrot, pumpkin, pumpkin, sweet potato, melon, mango, etc.) as well as delicious cod liver oil. Turns out carrots don’t just help you see in the dark… they help your overall eye health too!
  • 🥝 Vitamin C: Kiwis, blackcurrants, blueberries and oranges, green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, red peppers etc. are all good sources of Vitamin C.
  • 🍳 Vitamin D: Many foods are high in Vitamin D, including fatty fish, egg yolk, dairy products, dark chocolate, butter and margarine.
  • 🐿️ Vitamin E: This is found in nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, etc.) and seeds.
  • 🦀 Zinc: This mineral is found in certain seafood (crab, lobster, etc.), meats (beef, veal, etc.), cashew nuts, pecans, sesame seeds, etc.
  • 🐟 Omega-3 fatty acids: Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, tuna, etc.), nuts and seeds are full of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Consult your pantry and the oil you use in cooking. Vegetable oils like rapeseed, flax or walnut oil are also rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6.

💧 Good hydration prevents dry eyes

Dry eye, itchy eye, and lack of tears are all signs of dehydration. But tears play an essential role in the proper functioning of your eyes.

To avoid this, remember to drink well throughout the day. (Note: We mean water here, not wine).

If you’re fed up of regular water you can jazz it up and it will still have the same effect. Try some infusions, or sparkling water to encourage you to keep drinking and stay hydrated.

👀 Eye exercises

There are a few simple and easy-to-perform exercises that take care of your eyes and make them feel less tired. They also have the indirect benefit of improving your eyesight.

Eye massage not only makes you feel like you’re having a mini spa day, but it can also help improve your overall eye health. We’ve perfected our routine to help our tired eyes stay healthy; check out the top Horus X recommended eye massage technique here.

Another technique to rest your eyes is the popular 20-20-20 method. This eye exercise involves taking a break every 20 minutes (especially if working on a screen), for 20 seconds, to stare at an object located 20 meters away (6 feet).

A third effective method is to close your eyes and rotate them clockwise, then counterclockwise for several seconds. The best time to practice this is when your boss is being particularly frustrating.

Finally, whenever you have the opportunity, try looking near and far away alternatively, fixating on a specific object or point.

😍 Hot compresses work great against fatigue

The most simple and effective way to relieve eye fatigue is by using a hot compress.

All you have to do is take two compresses, soak them in water, and put them in the microwave for a few seconds.

Place one on each eye and let the relaxing heat soothe your tired, achy eyes.

For an extra dose of goodness, try soaking the compresses in different mixtures.

Chamomile, for example, is known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.

Just prepare chamomile tea and immerse two cotton pads in it to place on your eyes (after cooling and wringing them out; we’re not trying to burn you).

Other great infusions are cornflower water or aloe vera. Cornflower water has decongestant properties, and aloe vera has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Both are great for helping to improve your eyesight naturally at home.

💊 Brewer's yeast

Brewer’s yeast is a food supplement that if consumed regularly can be highly beneficial to your eyesight.

You can easily find it in pharmacies or organic stores for example, in the form of capsules or powder to sprinkle on your dishes.

You could also get your fill by having lots of beer… but we don’t necessarily recommend that route. Too often anyway…

🍵 Herbal teas and infusions

We’ve already got a whole article on which herbal teas are best for your eyesight, but here’s a quick recap:

Herbal teas help reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation which delivers more nutrients to your eyes, protects against free radicals, and strengthens blood vessels. All of these properties help reduce eye fatigue and keep your eyes strong and healthy.

Chamomile, green tea, hibiscus, peppermint, lemon balm… there’s something for everyone; so treat yourself!

What about visual fatigue?

Tired eyes are the enemy of good eyesight. It can make your vision seem blurry, unfocused or just generally not as sharp as it could be.

How to recognize eye strain or fatigue

The most common symptoms of eye fatigue are:

  • 😶‍🌫️ Blurry vision
  • 🧐 Decrease in visual acuity
  • 🤯 Headaches
  • 🔴 Redness, itching and irritation
  • 🔥 Burning sensation, tingling, dry eyes
  • 🫣 Light sensitivity
  • 😭 Tearing
  • 😩 Pain

Eye strain or fatigue is usually caused by:

  • ☀️ External attacks (wind, sun, pollution, dust, smoke, pollen, air conditioning, etc.)
  • 😱 Stress
  • 🥱Lack of sleep
  • 🧓 Age
  • 👓 Unsuitable glasses or lenses
  • 📱 Eye fatigue linked to screens

Also known as digital eye strain, the last cause of eye fatigue is one of the most common. Thanks 21st century.

Digital eye strain: The widespread, but fixable problem

Screens emit blue light which can be dangerous to our eyes, causing digital eye strain and potential health complications like eye disease. This includes myopia, or AMD, age related macular degeneration, which can be exacerbated by digital eye strain.

The time we spend in front of screens plays an essential role in the health of our eyes and the quality of our vision.

But we’re using them more and more. In fact, studies have found Gen Z spend 9 hours or more per day staring at screens. This makes them (and the rest of us, who aren’t too far behind) far more susceptible to issues like digital eye strain.

Luckily, it’s easy to protect yourself from the blue light emitted by screens!

Horus X have created a range of blue light glasses with the most effective filtration on the market. Keep your eyes safe no matter what you’re doing:

  • Our gaming glasses are great for intensive screen use, with modern looks and yellow lenses for ultimate filtration.
  • Our Nomad glasses range are elegant and timeless, with clear lenses that are perfect for in the office, or socializing afterwards.
  • Our sunglasses mean you don’t need to sacrifice one protection type for another, and can still soak in that health Vitamin D.

Horus X’s bonus eye care tips

There’s more ways to keep your eyes healthy than just avoiding blue light. You can pamper your eyes daily by adopting other effective practices, such as:

  • 🍪 Avoiding fatty and sugary foods: We’ve covered which foods are good for your eyes, but there are also some that can negatively impact your vision. We're sorry to tell you but all that good food and drink like soda, alcohol, biscuits, processed products, and others rich in saturated fats (cold meats, hamburgers, pastries, cheese…) are unfortunately the worst enemies of your sensitive eyes. As with everything in life, they’re best in moderation!
  • 👁️ Taking good care of your eyes: If you wear makeup, don't forget to remove it in the evening and remember to clean your eyes as soon as you can (a simple wash with clean water is enough).
  • 📴 Reducing screen time: Screens emit artificial blue light which is harmful to your eyeballs, so try to limit the time spent on them wherever possible.
  • 💡 Paying attention to brightness: For example, avoid reading in low light. Even if it doesn't directly damage your eyes, it's still the best way to cause visual fatigue and achy eyes.
  • 😎 Wear sunglasses outdoors: UV rays are a risk factor for many eye conditions and it’s essential not to expose your eyes to direct sunlight. Plus, with sunglasses you can do as many Horatio Caine impressions as you want.
  • 🧑‍⚕️ Visit your ophthalmologist once a year: There’s nothing better than a complete check-up of your eyes. It keeps them monitored and you can catch any issues early, and treat it effectively.
